Can a car actually be an investment?

Most people know that the second they drive a new car it starts to lose value. Sadly, the majority of models do depreciate every year. However, there are some that can actually be a smart investment. If they become a collectors’ item, they can increase in value or gain enough to offset the depreciation. We want to have a look at how this works and a few models that have the potential to be great investment cars. They will be worth watching if you are a collector or a car broker.

How do they gain value?

Car brokerSome cars get a massive fan base and become classics because they are attractive, special editions, or just fun to drive. If you can find a good model with low mileage and a full service history, you could strike gold.

There are numerous models that are classics today and worth a pretty penny. Think classic Ferraris. To give a more recent example though, consider VW Golf GTI and Peugeot 205 GTI models. They are some of the very best hot hatchbacks from the 80s and 90s. Today, they can be worth as much as £30,000 to collectors.

Ideally what you want is to find models that are rare now but highly desirable. They can have the best potential. Exotic and prestige brands can be the smartest options, or fun models from other brands.

Some models that could be a great investment

Every car broker should keep an eye on the market to see which models are gaining popularity for their increasing rarity. Let’s look at some that experts think could be the next hot cars.

Honda S2000

The Mazda MX-5 has an incredibly passionate fan base. However, you can’t exactly say they are rare. If you want a rarer convertible roadster, the Honda S2000 is a good option. They are incredibly fun to drive with plenty of power and engines that love high revs. If you can find one in great condition, you can enjoy it on nice days and look forward to finding a happy buyer in the future willing to pay back your investment.

Aston Martin DB9

If there is a brand that rarely fails to see a model become collectible, it is Aston Martin. The DB9 is certain to join that list in the future because it is beautiful and desirable. Manual models in particular will likely be the best investment because they are rarer. The thing to keep in mind here though is they are expensive to run.

BMW Z1

Many people’s favourite car brand is BMW. They are just really fun to drive, even if they earn some drivers a bad reputation. One of the most popular models at the moment is the Z8, a two seater sports car. However, it has already had the massive increase in prices. An alternative is the Z1. While not cheap, there is room for the values to grow massively. So, they could be a great investment. A fantastic thing here is you get an interesting looking car with a special feature; the doors disappear into the sill.

Range Rover L322

A lot of Range Rover owners will tell you it is quite expensive to own one. They can be costly to keep on the road, especially if there is a fault. So, most don’t see them as an investment. However, the L322 could be a surprisingly good one. Demand for them is rising, especially if you can find one with low mileage. You’ll be looking at models from 2002 – 2012 here, so finding one with less than 100,000 miles is rare. Models with a V8 diesel engine are some of the best, offering impressive reliability and economy.
